Gram vs Toncoin: Is Gram the Same as TON? The Complete 2026 Guide

heymesbot Team 9 min read

Toncoin was renamed Gram in June 2026. It is the exact same coin: your balance, address and value stay the same. Here is everything that changed, everything that didn't, and how to top up heymesbot with Gram.

Toncoin (TON) and Gram (GRAM) shown as one and the same coin

Short answer: Gram is Toncoin. In June 2026 the native coin of the TON blockchain was renamed from Toncoin (TON) to Gram (GRAM). Nothing was swapped, reissued or migrated. If you held 10 TON yesterday, you hold 10 GRAM today, in the same wallet, at the same address, with the same value.

And if you use heymesbot: you can keep topping up exactly as before. Send Gram (formerly Toncoin) to the same deposit address with your personal memo, and your balance is credited automatically. Whether an app still says "TON" or already says "GRAM", it is the same coin.

This guide covers what actually changed, why it happened, how to stay safe from the scams that appeared around the rename, and a step-by-step walkthrough for topping up heymesbot with Gram.

Key facts at a glance

  • Old name: Toncoin (TON) · New name: Gram (GRAM)

  • Effective date: June 15, 2026, after a community vote with 81.22% support

  • Network name: unchanged, still The Open Network (TON)

  • Your balance: unchanged, 1 TON = 1 GRAM, no action required

  • Migration or claim: none exists; anyone offering one is a scammer

What changed, and what stayed exactly the same

The rename touched three things only: the coin's name, its ticker and its logo. Everything that actually holds value or makes the network work stayed where it was.

What changed and what stayed the same after Toncoin became Gram

The official TON announcement was explicit that balances, addresses, smart contracts, NFTs and DeFi positions needed no migration and no user action. Exchanges and wallets switched their labels over a short transition, often showing the asset as "Gram (prev. Toncoin)" for a while so nobody would be confused.

One practical consequence: "TON" now usually means the network, and "GRAM" means the coin. You will still see the old name in older apps, tutorials and bots for some time. Treat both names as the same coin.

How the rename happened: a short timeline

The return of the Gram name was not an isolated decision. It was step four of a seven-step program that Telegram founder Pavel Durov launched in spring 2026 under the name Make TON Great Again (MTONGA).

  • April 9, 2026: Durov opens the MTONGA roadmap with a network upgrade that makes TON roughly ten times faster, with sub-second transactions.

  • Following weeks: transaction fees are cut by about six times.

  • May 4, 2026: Telegram announces it will replace the TON Foundation as the network's main driving force and become its largest validator.

  • June 1, 2026: Durov announces that Toncoin will be renamed Gram, calling it a return to the project's roots.

  • June 8, 2026: the TON Vote community poll closes, with 81.22% in favor.

  • June 15, 2026: the rename takes effect. Toncoin officially becomes Gram (GRAM).

  • July to October 2026: Telegram rolls out a native, non-custodial wallet for Gram, first called Gram Wallet and later renamed Money, while the older Wallet service continues as Walt.

Timeline from Telegram's 2018 Gram plan to the 2026 Toncoin to Gram rename

Why "Gram"? The name has history

Gram is not a new brand. It is the original one.

In 2018 Telegram published the white paper for the Telegram Open Network and named its coin Gram. The company raised about $1.7 billion from investors to build it. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission then sued, arguing the tokens were unregistered securities, and in 2020 Telegram stepped away from the project.

Independent developers kept the open-source code alive. The network became The Open Network, and the coin became Toncoin. Over the following years, TON grew into Telegram's Web3 layer: usernames, gifts, ad revenue sharing and in-app payments all came to run on it.

By 2026 Telegram was back at the center of the network, and reviving the name Gram closed the circle. As Durov put it, the original white paper had named the currency Gram, and the project was returning to its roots.

What the rename means for you

If you hold Gram in a wallet: do nothing. Your wallet may already show "GRAM" or may still show "TON" until it updates. Either way, the coins are the same.

If you trade on an exchange: the trading pairs were relabeled automatically. What used to be TON/USDT is now GRAM/USDT. No conversion happened in your account.

If you look at charts or price sites: price history was carried over to the GRAM listing, so the chart continues without a break.

If you use Telegram services: anything you used to pay for with Toncoin, such as gifts or collectible usernames, now shows prices in Gram. Same coin, same amounts.

If you use heymesbot: top-ups work exactly as before. Our deposit address and your personal memo did not change. The details are in the step-by-step section below.

Scam warning: there is no "TON to GRAM migration"

Every rename attracts scammers, and this one was no exception. The official announcement was clear: any request to "migrate", "exchange", "convert" or "claim" TON for GRAM is fraudulent.

Warning: there is no TON to GRAM migration, swap or claim

Watch for these red flags:

  • "Migrate your TON before the deadline." There is no deadline because there is nothing to migrate.

  • "Connect your wallet to claim your GRAM." Connecting a wallet to an unknown site and approving a transaction is how wallets get drained.

  • "Send TON, receive GRAM back." Nobody needs to send you GRAM in exchange for TON. They are the same coin.

  • Look-alike tokens. Some tokens use "Gram" in their name but are not the native coin. Real Gram is the native coin of the TON network, not a jetton with a similar name.

  • Your recovery phrase. No wallet, exchange, bot or support agent ever needs your 24 words. Anyone who asks is stealing.

heymesbot will never ask you to migrate coins, connect your wallet to a site or share your recovery phrase.

Telegram's wallets after the rename: Money and Walt

The rename was followed by a reshuffle of Telegram's crypto wallets, which caused some extra confusion:

  • Money (formerly Gram Wallet) is Telegram's built-in non-custodial wallet. You hold the keys. It focuses on storing and sending Gram and on buying gifts and collectible usernames. It opened to a limited group at the end of August and was rolled out to all users on October 9, 2026.

  • Walt (formerly Wallet in Telegram) is the separate custodial service run by The Open Platform. It supports hundreds of assets for trading and investing.

Both are compatible with Gram, and you can move Gram from Walt to Money inside Telegram. For topping up heymesbot, the key requirement is simple: the wallet must let you add a comment (also called memo or tag) to the transfer. Walt's withdrawal screen has this field, as do most TON wallets and exchanges.

How to top up heymesbot with Gram (formerly Toncoin)

heymesbot credits deposits automatically by matching the memo you attach to your transfer. The address is shared, the memo is yours. That is why the memo matters more than anything else.

Four steps to top up heymesbot with Gram using address and memo

  1. Open your wallet in the bot. Start @heymesbot and open the wallet section. You will see the deposit address and your personal memo.

  2. Copy both values exactly. Use the copy buttons rather than typing by hand. One wrong character breaks the match.

  3. Send Gram on the TON network. From your wallet or exchange, choose Gram (it may still be labeled TON or Toncoin) and the TON network. Paste the address, then paste your memo into the comment / memo / tag field.

  4. Wait a few minutes. heymesbot watches the blockchain and credits your balance automatically once the transfer is confirmed. Your new balance appears in the bot's wallet section.

A few tips that prevent almost every failed deposit:

  • Never skip the memo. Without it, your coins reach the heymesbot address but cannot be linked to your account automatically.

  • Pick the right network. When withdrawing from an exchange, select TON (The Open Network). Do not choose a wrapped version of the coin on another chain.

  • Try a small amount first if this is your first deposit or you are using a new wallet.

  • Forgot the memo? Contact heymesbot support with the transaction hash. The transfer is visible on the blockchain, so it can be traced and credited manually.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gram the same as Toncoin?

Yes. Gram (GRAM) is the new name of Toncoin (TON). Same coin, same supply, same balances and same price history. Only the name, ticker and logo changed.

Do I need to swap or migrate my TON to GRAM?

No. There is no swap, migration or claim. Your TON already is GRAM. Anyone asking you to migrate is a scammer.

Can I still top up heymesbot with Toncoin?

Yes. Since Toncoin and Gram are one coin, you top up exactly as before: same address, same personal memo.

What is the ticker of Gram?

GRAM. It replaced TON on June 15, 2026, so pairs such as TON/USDT now appear as GRAM/USDT.

Is the TON blockchain still called TON?

Yes. The network is still The Open Network (TON). Only its native coin is now called Gram.

Did the rename change the price of my coins?

No. A rename does not create or remove value. 1 TON became 1 GRAM, and the price chart continues under the new ticker.

What happens if I send Gram to heymesbot without the memo?

The coins arrive but cannot be matched to your account automatically. Send the transaction hash to heymesbot support and the deposit can be credited.

The bottom line

Toncoin did not disappear, and nothing was replaced. The coin simply took back the name it was born with. Your Gram is your Toncoin, your balance is safe, and topping up heymesbot works exactly as it always has: same address, your memo, TON network.
